The health care industry is rapidly changing, and is one of the fastest growing employment sectors in the nation. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that demand for professionals in this field will grow by more than 36% over the next few years. Because of the rapid growth of this field, those interested in earning degrees in Allied Health have also changed. Not everyone is pursuing a career in an Allied Health field right out of high school; now students may also be mature, employed individuals who have complex family responsibilities. Or perhaps they live or work some distance from the colleges and universities where they’d like to study.

The first type is the one that is commonly known as Standard Mandarin or Chinese which is the official spoken language of the People’s Republic of China and Republic of China (Taiwan). The other type is Mandarin as a dialect which is spoken across northern and south west China.

Any reference to Mandarin usually means Standard Mandarin. Standard Mandarin also varies from Mainland China to the version spoken in Taiwan. They also take on different names to distinguish the different versions. While Standard Mandarin acquires the name “Putonghua” in Mainland China its Taiwanese version is known as “Guoyu”. The only common factor among both the versions is that the phonology is based on the Beijing dialect.

Teaching our Kids

When our kids go to school, what do they learn? They learn from two levels, one level is from the schools curricula, the other from their peers, but it’s not so much what they learn, but how they learn to learn.

Learning “what” involves remembering what happened yesterday. We don’t have to create a new writing system every year, we can use the one developed years ago. In the same manner, we learn how to become engineers, doctors, and attorneys. This is one level of necessary learning; by memorizing the past.

How did society and culture develop in these early times? The Bible speaks of everything being created perfectly by Almighty God, but then it also describes how things went so terrible wrong suddenly, until we have a murder, and we have only reached Chapter 4 of Genesis.

Cain is so determined to create a worldly society - leaving God out of it - and this is where there is spiritual warfare today. But secular ways and secular things can be used of God. Our work - our industry - our service - our commercial transactions and trading - our music and culture - can all be redeemed by the saving Blood of Jesus Christ.

With three pounds of matter, called the brain, the human race has gained complete dominion over all of life on this planet. It has discovered the raw power of steam and used it to create the industrial revolution. It has discovered the raw power of splitting the atom and used it to create its own nightmare. It has discovered how to prolong and improve human life and this will result in a population explosion, where the rate of the human race doubles every forty years. Ironically, the great gift of humankind, superlative intelligence, may be the cause of its demise.

For many years I taught my fifth grade students about the symbols of the United States of America. Over the years I have grown to love our national symbol, the American Bald Eagle. Many students are shocked to learn that our national symbol is not the flag, but the Bald Eagle.

Most advice about using Microsoft PowerPoint is geared toward business users. Experts speak of creating presentations that entertain and motivate, while acknowledging that listeners can only absorb a small amount of information in one sitting.

But if you’re a teacher, let’s say in high school or college, your goals are different. Rather than motivating students to act or make a decision, you want them to learn. Ultimately they will be tested on content. You want to grab your students intellectually, not necessarily emotionally.

When you start out learning Spanish like I did in school by just learning a few basic words and phrases, you will be amazed at how quickly you will pick up and learn the language faster. Before I was born, my parents moved here from Mexico, and although they did know how to speak Spanish, they chose not to do so around the house. And I learned only a few simple phrases growing up. So even though as children we learned to speak English pretty well. Our Spanish was almost non-existent. My friends learned slowly but steadily at home, but I did not.
